Summer Research Opportunity for Undergraduate Students

The University of Virginia (http://www.virginia.edu/) Department of Computer Science (http://www.cs.virginia.edu/) was awarded a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/list_result.cfm?unitid=5049) in 2005 by the National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov/). We began our program in the summer of 2005 and are currently funded through the summer of 2007.

The topic of our REU site is "Creating Computer Applications for Medicine" and the Principal Investigator for this effort is Alfred C. Weaver, Professor of Computer Science.

The objective of our REU site is to involve eight to ten undergraduate students per year in an eight-week summer research program to develop new computer applications for medicine. All summer projects will be related to an on-going research project to protect privacy and enforce security for medical data. This research, currently in its fourth year, is conducted by Professor Weaver and five Graduate Research Assistants, and is sponsored by Microsoft Research (http://research.microsoft.com/). Our current research website provides an overview of our work and copies of our major presentations and papers.
